Law Schools Ranked by Grant Aid Coverage
196 schools · share of students receiving grant aid · ABA 509, 2025 cycle
Coverage is the least interesting of these numbers
Almost every school reports high coverage, so this ranking separates the few that do not from the many that do. If you are comparing schools on aid, median award size and share of recipients getting full tuitionwill tell you considerably more.

What the four reported bands mean
Every school must report where its grant recipients fall across four bands, which is the only disclosure that distinguishes a scholarship programme from a need-based discount. The figures below are the median share of grant recipients at each school nationally.
| Band | Median share of recipients |
|---|---|
| Half tuition or less | 41% |
| Above half, below full | 30% |
| Full tuition | 1% |
| Above full tuition | 1% |
The four bands are each rounded independently before being summed, so they do not always match the separately reported coverage figure — 3 schools differ by more than one percentage point, and a few sum to slightly above 100. Both figures are shown on each school’s page rather than reconciled.
Reading these figures honestly
- A median grant is not an offer. It is the midpoint among students who received aid, and it excludes the students who received none. A school reporting 90% coverage with a $30,000 median still leaves 10% of students with nothing.
- Percentiles are not minimums. A 25th-percentile grant of $10,000 does not mean the least award was $10,000 — it means 25% of recipients got that much or less.
- Conditional awards are counted differently. A grant contingent on maintaining a GPA can be cut after year one. See retention rates before treating a headline figure as reliable income.
